Facebook Deals will be Holy Grail of location-based mobile couponing: Seems like the retailers hold the key, all depends how much they want to incentivize an in-store visitor to to purchase, is the discount worth the bump in conversion? or the fact that your 200 or so FB friends now know you went to that store? Or would the store be better served to just incentivize you in-person, in exchange for some demographic data that they don’t get from Facebook?

Online Ad Spend is Set to Beat Newspaper Advertising in 2011
Check out this graph by WSJ.com and see the full story here. The bigger story here is how little online represents for the publications vs. print and how little it’s grown as a percentage since 2004. When I think about it, shouldn’t NYTimes.com and other large once offline player done a better job at growing the online portion of their business? It seems to me like smaller, niche content sites that are done well have taken a large piece if that pie already though, creating a paradigm shift that will only continue pull viewers/visitors from broader appeal sites like nytimes.com.

REI Leverages Facebook Check-In / Places for Marketing:
I thought this was really clever, while in REI over the weekend I noticed this sign below. Basically REI thinks is worth it to pay a dollar to a charity if you broadcast to all of your your 200 or so friends (that are most likely local folks) that you are at REI.
